An introduction to News photography
As a news photographer, our role is to record the news, current events, and lifestyle stories. We aim to capture the best images to document an event, tell a story or convey a message. Our work is there to support and enhance the printed word.
News photography is also sometimes referred to as photojournalism as it’s a form of journalism that uses images to tell a news story.
News photographers will cover everything from major Royal events and celebrity photocalls through to political conferences and breaking news stories. News photography is reproduced in newspapers, magazines and online.
Why should you use a professional news photographer?
News photographers use images to tell a news story. As a news photographer, it’s our job to tell a story honestly and impartially.
A professional news photographer will ensure they are well-informed and knowledgeable about the story they’re covering, and they will aim to create images that are both informative and entertaining.
A news photographer must be able to operate in a similar way to a reporter: we’re often required to make decisions instantly whilst carrying photographic equipment. We’re also trained to deal with challenges such as bad weather, large crowds, dangerous or threatening situations, and limited physical access to the subjects of our shots.
For all these reasons, it’s always advisable to hire a professional news photographer with experience in this type of work to ensure the best possible results.
